13 February 2025 - Global semiconductor giant Samsung Electronics officially unveiled its latest HBM3 (High Bandwidth Memory 3) series of products, marking a brand new stage in the development of high-performance storage technology.

The released HBM3 series products are designed for data centre acceleration, high-performance computing (HPC), and artificial intelligence (AI) applications with their extraordinary speed, higher power efficiency, and larger capacity. The Samsung HBM3 Icebolt series is particularly notable. This memory uses advanced 12-layer, 10nm-class DRAM stacking technology to achieve a massive 24GB of storage capacity, 1.5 times that of Samsung's predecessor, the HBM2E. Meanwhile, HBM3 Icebolt supports data transfer rates of up to 6.4Gbps, with a total bandwidth of up to 819GB/s, which is nearly 1.8 times faster than its predecessor, and is able to significantly increase data processing speeds to meet high-performance needs such as big data analysis and deep learning model training.

In terms of energy efficiency, HBM3 series products have also achieved significant improvements. Adopting an ultra-efficient design, HBM3 Icebolt is 10 per cent more energy efficient than its predecessor, and is able to maintain low power consumption even while delivering higher speeds. In addition, HBM3 Icebolt features an enhanced self-correction function that corrects all 16-bit errors to better prevent data corruption and ensure data stability and security.

The release of Samsung's HBM3 series of products not only demonstrates Samsung's leadership in high-performance storage technology, but also breathes new life into the development of data centres, high-performance computing and artificial intelligence. With the rise of generative AI and the surge in demand for complex GPUs, the HBM3 series of products will be a key force in accelerating development in these areas.
